Former senator, Shehu Sani, has commended the Department of State Services (DSS) for complying with the Kaduna State High Court order for the release of leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, and his wife, Zeenat.
Former aviation minister, Femi Fani-Kayode, directed his commendation to President Muhammadu Buhari.
El-Zakzaky and his wife were released on Monday night from DSS custody to travel to India for treatment.
In a tweet late Monday, Sani said respect for the rule of law is needed in the move to preserve Nigeria’s democracy.
“DSS compliance with the Court order on Sheikh Elzakzaky and his wife is commendable. Respect for the rule of law is the way to go in order to preserve this democracy,” he said.
Mr Fani-Kayode, in commending President Buhari for El-Zakzaky’s release, also called for the release of the former national security adviser (NSA), Sambo Dasuki, and a former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, among others.
“I commend @MBuhari for honoring the court order and releasing Sheik El ZakZaky. I urge him to release Col. Sambo Dasuki, who has been in solitary confinement for the last 3 years despite numerous court orders to release him, @YeleSowore, @dadiyata and ALL other pol. Prisoners,” he said.
El-Zakzaky and wife are facing an eight-count charge, including culpable homicide and public disturbance in connection with the December 2015 clashes between members of the IMN and soldiers in Zaria, which left many persons dead.
