Senator Shehu Sani has urged Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, to drop the idea of cultivating cannabis (Indian hemp) for legal use.
Akeredolu had said in a tweet on Tuesday on the sideline of his visit to Thailand for a programme on medicinal cannabis extract development that he plans to take advantage of the market to improve Ondo’s economy.
“We all know that Ondo State is the hot bed of cannabis cultivation in Nigeria. We know how to grow it and it thrives well in the Sunshine State. With an estimated value of $145 Billion in 2025, we would be shortchanging ourselves if we failed to tap into the Legal Marijuana Market,” Akeredolu had said.
In a tweet on Wednesday, Sani who represents Kaduna Central at the National Assembly said the governor should focus on partnering with Niger State to produce beans or Kaduna State to produce ginger.
He said Akeredolu can choose to partner with Benue State to produce yam as better alternatives to Indian hemp.
He, however, did not give reasons why cannabis should not be considered.
“My Brother Akeredolu, Lagos Partnered with Kebbi for Rice, please partner with Niger for Beans, Kaduna for Ginger or partner with Benue for Yam; Please leave this Indian Hemp matter for now,” Sani wrote.
