Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, has said that it would be unwise for anyone to call for the closure of Akure airport.
Akeredolu said this on Tuesday in reply to a tweet by social commentator, Kayode Ogundamisi.
Mr Ogundamisi had called for the closure of either Akure airport to accommodate the new Ekiti airport or vice versa.
He also said that the governors of the states should focus on roads, calling airports across the country “vanity projects”.
“Ekiti Airport? Needless. Even Akure Airport needs to be shut down, a lot of airports across Nigeria are vanity projects,” Ogundamisi said.
“We either close Ibadan and leave Akure or close Akure and leave Ibadan. Not sustainable. Focus on South West road networks to link Oodua States.”
In response, Akeredolu tweeted: “It would be most unwise to shutdown the Akure Airport. In 2018 it was the second fastest growing airport by passenger traffic according to @FAAN_Official (136% growth). We have seen how that has resulted in a new terminal and Jobs at the airport. Do not kill progress.”
