Socialite Laide Oropo, who ruled the Lagos social scene in the 70s and 80s, has passed on.
He died Sunday evening in Ijebu Ode, his home town after a brief illness.
The 79-year-old was born into the popular Oropo family of Itajana Quarters, Olode, Ijebu Ode.
He died at a private office located at Ogba Soye road along Abeokuta road, Ijebu-Ode in Ogun State.
Oropo had served as chairman of the Ogun State Sports Council during the Gbenga Daniel administration.
He would have turned 80 on November 6, two of his workers Iya Ola and Deji Olukosi told the news media.
They added that Oropo would be buried on Monday at his private residence at Makatewo, along Oke-Owa in Ijebu Ode.
The socialite became a household name in southwest Nigeria and beyond when Ebenezer Obey sang about him in the 1972 evergreen album Board Members.
