Police in Edo say they have arrested a soldier, Lance Corporal Mose Oguche, for allegedly stabbing a driver to death at Okene in Kogi State.
Edo police commissioner, Mohammed DanMalam, said the suspect has been transferred to the state command headquarters in Benin.
“The case is under investigation; it is a case of murder. He (the soldier) is a Nigerian and he is not above the law. I assure you that justice will be done in this case,” he said.
The deceased simply known as Ogbimi was said to have driven a towing van which collided with a Nissan Premera car driven by the soldier.
Mr Ogbimi and a mechanic were on a mission to recover a vehicle belonging to a transport company, Big Joe Motors, which had broken down.
Responding to the incident, spokesman of the 4 Brigade Army, Maidawa Mohammed, said: “This is certainly not in line with the disposition of the Nigerian Army, which places high premium on the sanctity of human lives.
“As alleged, this unfortunate circumstance will be thoroughly investigated and if established, justice shall take its course. I want to reassure the general public of the safety of their lives and property.”
