Some Afenifere leaders will be first to run if war starts – Junaid Mohammed

A lawmaker in the second republic, Junaid Mohammed, has lashed at some leaders of Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, making provocative statements.

Mohammed, in an interview with Independent Newspaper which was published on Monday, said the Yoruba leaders had not learnt any lesson from the Biafran war.

Stakeholders in the South West recently raised alarm over rising insecurity in the country after Funke Olakunrin, daughter of Afenifere leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, was killed by an armed gang suspected to be Fulani herdsmen on July 12.

Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, had last week visited President Muhammadu Buhari, saying the Yoruba do not want war.

On the same day, the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Gani Adams, on his visit to Fasoranti and his family, said the South West people would not fold their arms and be killed like chickens, though he added that the attacks must be handled by the nation’s security apparatus.

In the interview, Junaid described some of the Yoruba leaders as ‘noisemakers’ who will be the first to flee if war breaks out.

“People’s lives are determined partly by their culture. These people are noisemakers and if there is war today, they will run away because most of them have houses outside the country. They make big, big noise but some of the real fighters who will fight until death don’t even talk about it,” he said.
