American soul singer, Bill Withers, who wrote the popular song ‘Lean on Me’, has died of a heart complication at the age of 81.
This was contained in a statement released by his family on Friday.
It reads, “We are devastated by the loss of our beloved, devoted husband and father. A solitary man with a heart driven to connect to the world at large, with his poetry and music, he spoke honestly to people and connected them to each other. As private a life as he lived close to intimate family and friends, his music forever belongs to the world. In this difficult time, we pray his music offers comfort and entertainment as fans hold tight to loved ones.”
He was also known for hits such as the popular heartbreak song, ‘Ain’t no Sunshine’, ‘Lean on Me’ and ‘Lovely Day.’
Following the announcement of his death, tributes poured in from fans and celebrities alike.
Hamilton star Lin-Manuel Miranda tweeted, “Rest In peace, maestro Bill Withers.” while the rapper, Chance the Rapper described Withers as “Really the greatest.”
Withers was born William Harrison Withers Jr in 1938 in Slab Fork, West Virginia in the United States of America.
The three-time Grammy winner is survived by his wife Marcia Johnson and their two children, Todd and Kori.
