A final year student of Federal University, Dutse, Jigawa State Aminu Adamu has apologised to first lady Aisha Buhari following his release from detention.
Adamu was arrested at the university on November 18, 2022, after Mrs Buhari instructed a team of police detectives to track him down over a tweet she considered defamatory.
On November 29, 2022, he was charged with cybercrime, cybersquatting, computer-related forgery, conspiracy and criminal breach of trust.
Adamu had in October posted a tweet in Hausa which, when translated to English, reads “The mother has got fatter by eating masses’ money.”
His friends said he made the post because he was frustrated about the prolonged strike by university lecturers that lasted for more than eight months across the country.
Following interventions from some Nigerians, Mrs. Buhari withdrew the case against Adamu on Friday evening.
Adamu expressed his joy on Twitter after his release. “I would like to use this medium to express my sincere apologies to those I’ve hurt especially our mother, Aisha Buhari.
“It was never my intention to hurt your feelings and Insha Allah, I will change for the better. However, I’m also grateful for your forgiveness, thank you mama,” he wrote on Saturday.
He also thanked the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) for their “support and guidance.”
