Members of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) on Thursday protested in Benin City, Edo State capital, over the rape and murder of a female student of the University of Benin, Uwa Omozuwa.
Ms Omozuwa, 22, was raped and injured in a church where she went to study on May 27. She died from the injuries three days later in a hospital.
During the protest on Thursday, the students held placards and called for justice for the deceased.
They also demanded that death sentence be pronounced for sex offenders.
NANS’ President, Danielson Akpan, led the students in the protest.
The lawmaker representing Ovia Federal Constituency, Dennis Idahosa, who also joined the students in the protest, vowed to move a motion to support capital punishment at the floor of the house.
Omozuwa’s death has spark outrage nationwide with renewed calls for social justice and an end to rape.
