Senator Shehu Sani has jokingly advised the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Abubakar III, not to speak out in order not to be labelled a ‘contortionist’.
The Sultan had on Thursday lamented the hardship being faced by Nigerians, noting that hunger was killing the people more than the dreaded coronavirus.
The former lawmaker reacted to the monarch’s statement on Twitter on Friday partly in Pidgin English.
“The Sultan reportedly said ‘hunger kills more people than coronavirus in Nigeria’…Your Highness abeg make you no talk again make dem no say na you be the contortionist or abi na wetin dem dey call am. You know say dem de vex now since wey dem return home,” he said.
The Sultan spoke during the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council meeting attended by the Secretary to Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha.
“There is a very serious virus that is killing people much higher than coronavirus. That virus is hunger; there is hunger virus and it’s very serious. You need to go round the country into the villages, into the towns and see how people are really struggling to survive,” he said.
The monarch’s call comes after the dethronement of Lamido Sanusi as emir of Kano by the state government.
Sanusi has been critical of northern governors on negligence of issues like insecurity and education in the region.
