Sultan of Sokoto Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar does not have any interest in the forthcoming elections of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), sources in his palace have said.
The Sultan is rumoured to have recently received one of the candidates running for elections to become the next NFF president.
According to the rumour, the monarch gave the aspirant his blessing.
But palace sources told The Nation on Sunday that the Sultan has not and will not endorse any candidate running for an elective position in the NFF.
“As a policy, the Sultan welcomes all Nigerians and foreigners alike and indeed all men and women of goodwill who come to pay home and seek his blessings but does not endorse candidates involved in a political contest for office be it football or social circles,” the source said.
The newspaper also quoted a broadcaster and the Kogunan Sokoto, Danladi Bako, as affirming the words of the palace sources.
Bako said: “The Sultan does not get involved in elections of any sort.”
NFF elections are scheduled to hold this September. NFF president Amaju Pinnick has said he will not seek re-election.
