Nigeria’s Super Eagles have dropped one place in the latest FIFA Rankings released on Thursday morning.
The three-time African champions slipped to 39th in the world following an unbelievable defeat to South Africa in an Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier in June.
It is the first time the Eagles have either failed to maintain or move up in the ranking since Gernot Rohr took over the helms last year.
South Africa, meanwhile, were rewarded for their historic win in Uyo with a step up to 64.
Despite losing four places, Egypt (24) remain Africa’s top-ranked team followed by Senegal (27), DR Congo (28), Tunisia (34) and Cameroon (36).
Nigeria, who face Cameroon in a World Cup qualifier next month, retained its sixth position on the continent.
Globally, Germany’s recent FIFA Confederation Cup triumph helped them displace Brazil at the top.
Argentina, Portugal and Switzerland complete the top five.
