Super Eagles and Bordeaux winger, Samuel Kalu, was rushed to hospital on Friday after collapsing in the Super Eagles’ final training session before their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) opener.
Kalu fell while trying to take a corner-kick in Friday’s training session in Alexandria, Egypt and was immediately rushed to the hospital.
The 21-year-old underwent several medical examinations upon arrival in the hospital and he was said to have collapsed due to dehydration.
Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) media chief, Demola Olajire, confirmed the situation, with a relief message that the Bordeaux winger has been advised to drink more water.
“I have been told Samuel Kalu has been stabilised. He was taken to hospital for tests and he is certified okay. He was dehydrated, they said. Told him he needs to be taking enough fluids,” Olajire said.
Kalu is one of the nine forwards in Coach Gernot Rohr’s squad and it remains to be seen if he would be available for the Group B opening game against the Swallows of Burundi at the Alexandria Stadium on Saturday.
Kalu made his senior debut with Slovak side, AS Trencin, before joining Belgian club, Gent, where he spent 18 months.
He joined Bordeaux in the French Ligue 1 in 2018 and scored three times in his debut campaign, which also saw him earn his first international call-up.
He scored his first international goal for the Super Eagles on October 13, 2018 in a 4-0 victory against Libya.
Gunmen kidnapped Kalu’s mother earlier in 2019 as she travelled home in Abia.
She was released six days later although it remains unclear if a reported ransom was paid.
