Super Falcons defender Michelle Alozie has shared the iconic photo of England’s Lauren James stamping on her during Nigeria’s game against the English on Monday at the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

James got herself sent off after stepping on Alozie’s butt following a clean tackle by the Nigerian. She was initially shown a yellow card for the challenge. The player however got her marching orders after a VAR check. Her action has been condemned by many as unprofessional.

Speaking to reporters, Alozie confirmed that she was doing fine, although surprised by James’ reaction to her tackle.

“It was good for us. James is a really good player. And nullifying her was really big for us. We didn’t want her to move freely and get those shots off that she usually does. It was good for us to have her taken out of the game,” she said.

“I was a little bit surprised by her reaction to the tackle. I don’t think it was really needed. I’m fine, my butt is fine from her stepping on it! I was kind of confused initially. I didn’t understand what was going on at first. There’s no hard feelings, it’s just a game.”

The Falcons lost the keenly contested tie 4-2 on penalties to crash out of the tournament.

Alozie, who alongside Desire Oparanozie lost penalties in the shootout, also wrote: “Self disappointment overcasted with overwhelming pride for my teammates, gratitude for the journey, and glory to God—always.”

Alozie holds a bachelor’s degree in molecular biology from Yale University and works as a part–time cancer research technician at Texas Children’s Hospital.
