Police have arrested a suspect in connection to the rape and murder of a 100-level student of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), Uwa Omozuwa.
Deputy Commissioner of Police, Operations, Ayoola Ajala, stated this on Monday while receiving protesters at the police command.
Ajala assured the protesters that investigation had begun and “arrests have been made in connection with the murder”.
The protesters, made up of UNIBEN students and members of the public, had stormed the headquarters of the state police command in Benin to demand justice for Uwa.
Carrying placards with various inscriptions and dressed in black, the proetsters walked from King’s Square area of Benin City to the state police command headquarters at the GRA.
Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, said in a tweet that according to the spokesman of Edo Police Command, Chidi Nwabuzor, the suspect was arrested after the fingerprint on the fire extinguisher Ms Omozuwa was attacked with was examined.
Omozuwa had gone to a church to study on May 27. There she was said to have been accosted by some men, raped and hit with a fire extinguisher.
She died on May 30 at the hospital.
