Imam Dalhatu Imam, the special adviser on media and public affairs to Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State, has declared his interest to represent Bali-Gassol Federal Constituency of Taraba State in the House of Representatives.
The 40-year-old is seeking to contest on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2019.
“Over the years, I have come face to face with some of the biggest challenges confronting the people of Nigeria. I have had the rare privilege of interacting with politicians at the highest level,” Imam said in a message made available to Qed.ng on why he is contesting.
“Having spent close to twenty years working as a journalist, rising to the position of Group Politics Editor in THISDAY, unarguably one of Nigeria’s most influential newspapers, and having worked in the parliament as media adviser to the then Speaker Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, I found myself often speaking about the need for quality representation.
“In all these times, I have learned that the legislature provides a veritable avenue to make meaningful impact on the lives of the people through valuable contributions during plenary, at committee works and during oversight visitations.
“I know the important role legislators can play in protecting national resources, safeguarding democracy and attracting federal presence to their constituencies.
“What the final point implies is that although it is not a legislator’s job to build roads, for instance, a diligent representative can ensure that a federal road within the constituency which has suffered neglect is worked on. This also applies to other sectors like healthcare and education, among others.
“I decided to seek the nomination of my party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), because I believe I have what it takes to deliver on the mandate of the people.”
A graduate of the Kaduna Polytechnic where he bagged both OND and HND in mass communication, Imam also holds two masters degrees in developmental studies and public relations.
His working experience took him from the New Nigerian Newspapers in Kaduna to THISDAY and eventually to the National Assembly in 2011 where he served as spokesman to then Speaker Tambuwal.
His appointment as media adviser was one of the earliest made by Tambuwal after his election as governor in 2015.
