A tanker driver was on Tuesday arrested for crushing his conductor to death in the Liverpool area of Lagos State.
A source at the Apapa Police Station said detectives at the scene arrested the driver immediately the accident occurred in the morning.
Eyewitnesses said that the driver was driving towards the Tin-can area through the Liverpool Bridge when he noticed traffic gridlock on the bridge.
The driver told Saudu, from Adamawa State, to alight and watch the rear for him so that he would reverse the vehicle and pass through another road.
One of the eyewitnesses, who simply identified himself as Umoru, explained that the conductor went behind the vehicle but the driver suddenly reversed, crushing him to death.
Weeping profusely, Saudu’s relation, who also simply identified himself as Abubakar, blamed the driver for being careless.
According to Abubakar, many people who saw the corpse of Saudu wept because the vehicle crushed his head.
The Divisional Police Officer in charge of the station, a Chief Superintendent of Police, Usman Ndanbabo, ordered policemen at the station to remove the corpse to a general hospital mortuary.
