A former deputy director of the Lagos Internal Revenue Service (LIRS), Olanike Disu, died on Monday, barely 24 hours after celebrating her birthday on Sunday.
The mother-of-two and member of the executive committee of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) died at a private hospital in Lagos after a brief illness.
CITN confirmed the “unfortunate demise” of the Oklahoma City University graduate.
A statement from the institute said, “She was the current Chairman of the 2018 Annual Tax Committee (ATC). She was also an Assistant Director with the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) until her death.
“We pray that God will comfort her family and the CITN family, and grant them the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.”
Mrs Disu’s death continues a chain of tragedies that have befallen her family in the last two years.
Her husband died a few weeks ago after reportedly slumping.
Tajudeen Disu, her brother-in-law and managing director of the Lekki Free Trade Zone, was shot dead during a clash between policemen and some youths in Okunraiye community, Lekki, Lagos on October 12, 2015.
Her father, Elkanah Olatunji Williams, died a few weeks after the Lekki tragedy.
Speaking at the burial of her father in 2015, Mrs Disu said “education meant so much to him such that he used his land at Ijeshatedo (Lagos) as collateral for a loan to pay my fees while I studied in the university in the United States.”
