Singer Tems celebrated her mother’s birthday by dedicating her Grammy Award for Best African Music Performance for the song ‘Love Me Jeje’ to her at the 67th edition of the awards.
Taking the stage at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles on Sunday, Tems became emotional as she expressed gratitude to God, her team and most importantly, her mother.
“Wow, dear God. Thank you so much for putting me on this stage and bringing me this team,” she said.
“Tomorrow is my mum’s birthday, and this is her first Grammy. I just want to thank you, ma, because she has really done a lot for me and my brother. Happy birthday, mum.”
Tems also acknowledged her team, including Muyiwa, Wale and her stylist, before concluding with, “To God be the glory. Honestly, He has changed my life so much.”
This marks Tems’ second Grammy win, following her first award for her contribution to Future’s ‘Wait For U.’
In a highly competitive category, ‘Love Me Jeje’ triumphed over Yemi Alade’s ‘Tomorrow,’ Asake’s ‘MMS,’ Chris Brown’s ‘Sensational’ featuring Davido and Lojay and Burna Boy’s ‘Higher.’
Notably, all nominees in the Best African Music Performance category were Nigerian, further cementing the country’s dominance on the global music scene.
The category, introduced last year, was first won by South African singer Tyla for her hit single ‘Water.’
