The management of ThisDay Newspapers Limited has suspended indefinitely two of its deputy editors over a false report about the United States’ embassy denying visa to the founder of Living Faith Church, David Oyedepo.
The report published last Friday claimed that Oyedepo created a scene at the embassy after being denied visa and made calls to high-profile individuals before being granted one.
However, the newspaper said early Tuesday that the deputy editors were suspended after it investigated the publication and found that they “failed to follow its well-established traditions of carrying out the necessary checks and confirmations expected of personnel of their status in a sensitive story of that nature.”
Oyedepo and the US embassy both denied the report.
ThisDay had last Saturday published a Corrigendum, acknowledging the error in the publication, and apologised to the cleric for the embarrassment the story might have caused him.
