Nollywood hit the 50% mark in the City to City segment at the on-going Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on Sunday with the screening of Izu Ojukwu’s 76 at the Isabel Bader Theatre.
The gripping drama set against the backdrop of the attempted 1976 military coup against the government of General Murtala Mohammed is one of Nigeria’s most fancied offerings at the annual festival.
Preceding 76 at the festival were Kemi Adetiba’s The Wedding Party, Steve Gukas’ 93 Days and Uduak-Obong Patrick’s Just Not married.
Each of the movies has received varying response from the Nigerian and international audiences in Toronto, with 93 Days and 76 getting more positive ratings.
The second round of Nollywood showing in the City to City segment kicks off on Monday with Omoni Oboli’s Okafor’s Law.
It will be followed by Niyi Akinmolayan’s The Arbitration, Abba Makama’s Green White Green and Daniel Emeke Oriahi Oko Asewo on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday respectively.
TIFF 2016 is spotlighting Lagos as “where’s hot right now” in filmmaking.
That informed the selection of eight films by directors operating from the Centre of Excellence for City to City.
It is the first time that honour will come the way of Africa.
