Tinubu mourns writer Mabel Segun

President Bola Tinubu has expressed condolences over the death of renowned writer, broadcaster, educator and table tennis champion  Mabel Segun, who died on Thursday, a month after celebrating her 95th birthday.

Her family announced her death in a statement, saying, “It is with gratitude to God for a life well spent in the pursuit of excellence in Literature, Broadcasting, and Sports that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Mabel Dorothy Okanima Segun (née Aig-Imoukhuede). Funeral arrangements will be published in due course.”

In a statement on Friday, Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, conveyed the President’s sympathies to Segun’s family, the literary community and her admirers across the country.

“Mabel Segun’s extraordinary and enduring impact on Nigeria’s literary landscape over decades is undeniable,” Tinubu said, acknowledging her pioneering contributions to children’s literature and influence on generations of writers.

He described her as an “illustrious writer” whose legacy would continue to shape Nigeria’s literary heritage.

The President prayed for the repose of her soul and divine comfort for her loved ones.

Segun is survived by her children, Gbenga and Omowunmi Segun, as well as grandchildren.
