Some students of Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State on Monday sang the national anthem in celebration of Tobi Amusan on her 100m hurdle world record win.
Amusan, who was born in Ijedu-Ode, attended the school while growing up.
The 25-year-old won gold at the women’s 100m hurdles on Sunday at World Athletics Championship in Oregon, USA.
She clocked an incredible 12.06 seconds. But her winning time was not recognised as a world record due to an illegal tailwind of 2.5 metres per second.
The Ijedu-Ode-born sprinter had earlier set a world record in the semi-final where she clocked 12.12 seconds.
Amusan could not hold back tears on the podium while the Nigeria national anthem was ongoing.
In a viral video, students of her alma mater sang the national anthem while holding her picture.
A presidential candidate Peter Obi said in a tweet on Monday that Amusan’s tears showed that Nigeria needs leaders who would match the ambition of the youth with good leadership.
“I sincerely congratulate Tobi Amusan on winning the 100M hurdles gold medal and setting a world record.
“Her tears at the ceremony podium while the Nigerian anthem played, connects that our dear country needs leaders to match the talents and ambitions of her youths,” he tweeted.
Oregon 2022 is Amusan’s third appearance at the World Championships after making her debut in London in 2017 where she made the semi-finals before finishing fourth in the final in Doha in 2019. She also placed fourth at the Tokyo Olympics.
