Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Atiku Abubakar says the achievement of Tobi Amusan at World Athletics Championship stresses his plans to refocus sports in Nigeria.
Amusan won gold at the women’s 100m hurdles at the championship in Oregon, US on Sunday.
The Ijedu-Ode-born sprinter clocked an incredible 12.06 seconds, smashing her world record in the semi-final where she clocked 12.12 seconds.
Atiku said in a tweet on Monday that he was proud of her feat.
“All hail Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan, the record-breaking women’s 100m hurdles champion.
“I am particularly proud of this feat, and it underscores my plan to refocus investments in sports, and creative sectors, amongst others,” said Atiku.
Other top presidential candidates Peter Obi and Bola Tinubu have also congratulated Amusan.
Oregon 2022 is Amusan’s third appearance at the World Championships after making her debut in London in 2017 where she made the semi-finals before finishing fourth in the final in Doha in 2019. She also placed fourth at the Tokyo Olympics.
Also, President Muhammadu Buhari, in a congratulatory message by his spokesman Femi Adesina on Monday, joined millions of Nigerians in celebrating Amusan “who in one night stunned the athletics world with her superlative and stellar performance.”
