Tokunbo Wahab denies accusing NAFDAC over sachet water incident

Tokunbo Wahab

Lagos State commissioner for environment and water resources Tokunbo Wahab has clarified his stance following a viral video showing individuals destroying sachet water packs in factories and on buses, which initially led to suggestions that the perpetrators were officials of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).

Mr Wahab emphasised that he did not accuse NAFDAC of any misconduct. His clarification came after NAFDAC publicly denied involvement in the actions shown in the video, stating that the agency’s enforcement methods do not include such practices.

In an earlier statement, Wahab noted that preliminary investigations identified the individuals in the video as regulatory officers targeting non-compliant sachet water producers to protect public health. However, NAFDAC responded via its X handle on Sunday, stating that the actions depicted in the video do not align with its standard operating procedures (SOP).

Following NAFDAC’s rebuttal, an X user Weyimi Lube criticised Wahab for commenting without verifying all the facts, suggesting there was miscommunication or a lack of thorough investigation.

Wahab, in response on Monday, reiterated that his statement was misinterpreted and clarified his position: “A video showing individuals harassing pure water sellers was brought to my attention. Upon investigation, it was confirmed that these individuals were not affiliated with any Lagos State government agency. Based on initial information, it was believed they might be linked to @NafdacAgency.

““That said, our press statement did not accuse NAFDAC of any wrongdoing. In fact, we specifically commended their efforts in safeguarding public health and safety. Any suggestion otherwise misrepresents the intent of the statement,” Wahab said.

He also addressed rumour about a potential ban on sachet water in Lagos, stating unequivocally that the government has no intention of prohibiting its production or sale.

“While there was a minor miscommunication, it does not negate the overall accuracy of the press release or our commitment to addressing the issue transparently. We encourage everyone to focus on verified facts and avoid amplifying inaccuracies,” Wahab added.

The commissioner reaffirmed the Lagos State Government’s commitment to clear communication and public interest, urging residents to rely on verified information to avoid unnecessary panic.
