Actress Toyin Abraham has accused some cinemas of undermining her success following the release of her latest film, Alakada: Bad and Boujee.
The 42-year-old made this claim in an Instagram post on Friday while announcing that the film grossed N134 million within seven days of its release, surpassing the N52 million her previous movie, Malaika, earned in the same timeframe last year.
Celebrating the achievement, Toyin posted a promotional image alongside a chart of cinema screenings.
In the list shared, Funke Akindele’s Everybody Loves Jenifa appeared five times, while Alakada featured twice.
She captioned, “God of my journey, thank you. I am grateful that you helped me beat my last record! I am my own competition! Last year, I made N52m after seven days; this year, I made N134m after seven days. That is over a 157.69% increase. God, I am that woman who returns to say thank you.”
She thanked fans for their unwavering support despite challenges, “To the cinemas, especially the ones that have made it clear that their goal is for the industry to grow and support every movie irrespective of who is distributing it, thank you. And to those cinemas that made it clear they don’t want us to succeed, God has proven Himself to be greater than man—thank you, Lord.”
Alakada: Bad and Boujee, which debuted in cinemas on December 20, is the fifth instalment in the popular Alakada series.
The franchise includes Alakada (2009), Alakada 2 (2013), Alakada Reloaded (2017), and Fate of Alakada: The Party Planner (2020).
The film features a star-studded cast, including Stephanie Coker, Odunlade Adekola, Bimbo Ademoye, Olumide Owuru, Yetunde Barnabas, Iyabo Ojo, Portable and King Sunny Ade.
Alakada: Bad and Boujee is directed by Adebayo Tijani and distributed by FilmOne Entertainment.
