Tributes have poured in for Senator Dan Etete as the former minister of petroleum (1995–1998), celebrates his 80th birthday on Friday, February 10.
Hailed among the Ijaw as Dauzia Loya Etete, the octogenarian is the Ndagbudu Keme Keni of Izon-Ibe.
In celebrating their son, Chief Bukazi Etete of the Etete Royal Family of Odi describes the former minister as a “shining example of what it means to serve, be loyal and industrious with an unwavering commitment to unity and progress especially for the Ijaw nation. In a world often divided, your detribalized approach to leadership has broken barriers, inspired hope and forged harmony within the family and across cultures.”
In a tribute signed by Hon Tariye Isaac Lelei, executive chairman of Kolokum/Opokuma Local Government Area, Etete is described as “a passionate advocate for the rights and development of the Niger Delta.”
Sir Jonathan Lokpobiri Snr, president of Ijaw Youth Council (Worldwide), in his tribute, hails Etete as “an illustrious Ijaw son” whose “life’s journey is a testament to resilience, visionary leadership and an unwavering commitment to the Ijaw nation and Nigeria.”
In a tribute signed by its president, Prof. Benjamin Ogele Okaba, the Ijaw National Congress salutes Dan Etete as a “foremost icon of the Ijaw struggle for self-determination” whose contributions “championed initiatives that fostered local content, paved the way for offshore exploration and advocated for the proper utilization for Nigeria’s vast natural resources.”
To Ijaw Creek Elites, Etete is a “towering icon of resilience, patriotism and industry” whose “life exemplifies the spirit of determination and excellence that defines the Ijaw people. Through your remarkable journey, you have shown unwavering commitment to the advancement of our nation and the upliftment of the Ijaw nation.”
In commemorating Etete’s 80th birthday, the Bayelsa Elders Forum (BEF) describes him as “a statesman and patriot” who has “left an enduring impact on the political and economic landscape of our country” and who as “Petroleum Minister championed the empowerment of indigenous players in the oil and gas sector, paving the way for greater involvement of Ijaw entrepreneurs in managing our natural resources.”
