Super Eagles defender, William Troost-Ekong, is glad his decision to represent Nigeria over the Netherlands is reaping dividends.
Born in the Netherlands to a Nigerian father, and Dutch mother, Troost-Ekong played for his maternity nation at several junior levels.
However, he switched allegiance to Nigeria in 2015 and is pleased he did.
”I think I made the right choice, I am just really happy it worked out the way it is,” said Troost-Ekong to Kwese Sports.
“There was some talk in the last weeks about Tyronne who just made the choice as well, that he should be considered to be playing for the Dutch national team now. We were laughing about it.
” It’s a new generation coming through, I think Alex has done the same maybe choosing Nigeria over England, and Ola Aina now. It is exciting to see that people want to play for Nigeria.
”It was always in my heart ready to play for Nigeria and I think it is amazing that hopefully, I can one day be a role model for other kids that grew up in Europe that want to play for their original country.”
Troost-Ekong has added 18 more caps and is almost certain to make Gernot Rohr’s team to Russia.
