Several people have lost their lives after an articulated vehicle rammed into a roadside market in Iworoko Ekiti, Irepodun/Ifelodun local government area of Ekiti State on Saturday night.
It was gathered that the truck coming from Ifaki-Ekiti, loaded with branded bags of rice of the senator representing Ondo Central Senatorial District, Tayo Alasoadura of the All Progressives Congress (APC), rammed into the market at about 8pm due to brake failure.
At the scene of the accident, bodies of the victims could be seen from where the truck reportedly lost control.
According to eyewitnesses, the truck with full load of customised bags of rice with the picture, name and logo of the senator who is recontesting his seat in the National Assembly, had crushed two vehicles before it rammed into some shops.
Sympathisers and fire fighters engaged in the rescue operations which lasted till midnight.
Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and policemen joined in the rescue operation, and also prevented angry youths from setting the truck ablaze.
Bodies of the victims have been deposited in the mortuary.
