Two men in court over alleged attempt to escape from lawful custody

Two men- Muktar Abubakar, 20, and Ibrahim Abubakar, 19, were on Tuesday arraigned in a Karu  Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, over alleged attempt to escape from lawful custody.

The defendants of no fixed addresses were charged with joint act, mischief and attempt to escape from lawful custody, offences the defendants denied committing.

The offences contravened Sections 79, 327 and 95 of the Penal Code.

The judge, Mr Hassan Ishaq, admitted the defendants to bail in the sum of N 50,000 each, with one surety each in like sum and adjourned the case until Feb. 19 for hearing.

The prosecutor, Mr Mahmud Ismail ’la, had informed the court, that the defendants were arrested on January, 20, by a team of policemen from Karu Police Station.

He said that they were charged with joint act, theft and belonging to a gang of thieves.

The prosecutor said that after the defendants were arrested and kept in the police cell, they both used their hands to start digging a hole on the wall of the cell.

Ismail’la told the court that the defendants had the intention of escaping and helping other criminals escape from police custody before they were caught in the act.
