A highly-equipped fire truck belonging to the United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc was on hand on Friday to assist state fire fighters in Obalende area of Lagos put out fire after a fuel tanker heading to NNPC Mega Station in Ikoyi got involved in an accident.
The fire was said to have begun around 5 pm after the tanker fell on its side.
One person was confirmed killed in the incident with about 16 others injured.
Residents heaved a sigh of relief on sighting the UBA mega fire truck heading to the scene of the fire to assist state fire fighters.
The UBA Fire Service has in recent past intervened with its world-class equipment to put off fires in Balogun market, Transcorp Office and many others.
Following the truck’s arrival, it did not take long before the fire was prevented from spreading to nearby buildings.
The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) released a statement commiserating with families of the victims of the incident.
The corporation’s Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs, Dr Kennie Obateru, in the statement wished all that sustained injuries in the incident quick recovery.
Obateru explained that all the injured people had been taken to the hospital while further investigation was on to determine the cause of the accident.
He said: ”A fuel truck belonging to NPPC’s petroleum products retail affiliate, NNPC Retail Limited, was involved in the road accident while conveying petrol from the Satellite depot to the NNPC Mega Station in Ikoyi, Lagos.
“The mishap, which occurred around 5p.m. Friday, led to the inferno which consumed the petrol-laden truck in front of a hospital and gas station.”
Obateru expressed appreciation to the good spirited people of Lagos around the scene of the incident and fire service personnel who brought the fire under control.
