The management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, has launched a “full-scale” investigation into an altercation between a student, Precious Mbakwe, and a lecturer, Chukwudi Okoye, which was captured in viral social media videos.
In a statement signed by the university’s spokesperson, Njelita Louis, on Tuesday, the institution assured the public that it is handling the matter with seriousness and urged all parties to remain calm.
The statement noted that necessary actions and sanctions would follow based on the findings of the investigation.
“In line with our core values of discipline, self-reliance, and excellence, and in adherence to the principles of fair hearing, equity, and justice, the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Joseph I. Ikechebelu, has ordered a full-scale, transparent, and unbiased investigation into the matter,” part of the statement read.
“Nnamdi Azikiwe University remains an institution of learning that upholds high moral and ethical standards. There is no place for indiscipline, misconduct, or any form of unacceptable behavior within our community.”
The incident reportedly occurred when Mr. Okoye, a lecturer in the Department of Theatre Arts, walked past Ms. Mbakwe, a third-year History and International Studies student, while she was recording a video in the university hallway. He reportedly tapped her and said, “excuse me.”
Videos circulating online show Ms. Mbakwe reacting angrily, claiming that the lecturer had hit her. She was later seen confronting him in a heated exchange, which escalated into a physical altercation.
The situation drew the attention of students and officials as the confrontation turned chaotic. Footage from the scene shows Ms. Mbakwe tearing the right side of Mr. Okoye’s brown native attire while holding onto him. Despite the aggression, the lecturer did not retaliate.
Images circulating online reveal bite marks on Mr. Okoye’s arm, and another picture shows him receiving medical attention, reportedly at the school clinic.
Both individuals have since shared their versions of the event as the university investigates the matter.
