Al-Qalam University in Katsina is set to honour the late President Umaru Yar’Adua with a posthumous doctorate of letters at its 16th convocation ceremony, scheduled for Saturday.
Vice-chancellor Prof. Nasiru Musa-Yauri announced this at a press briefing on Monday in Katsina.
In addition to Yar’Adua, the late Walin Daura, Sani Buhari and Dahiru Mangal will receive doctor of business administration honours, while Bilya Sanda will be conferred with a doctor of Islamic studies.
The VC said, “We are excited to be joining the league of Nigerian Universities that have embraced the deeply rooted academic culture of annual convocation ceremonies.
“Last year, we held the convocation ceremony in November, which celebrated up to 15th set of graduates of this university.
“This convocation is for the graduates of the 2023/2024 session, with 1,433 graduates who have successfully completed their degree programmes.
“During the event, 22 of them will be conferred with the first class honour, 218 second class upper, 641 second class lower, 499 third class, and 53 pass degrees.”
Musa-Yauri said seven post-graduate students would be conferred with a doctor of philosophy degree, two with MSc and 12 professional masters.
He disclosed that there would be a novelty football match on Wednesday between the university’s alumni and the current students.
According to him, the final of the university’s Quranic recitation competition will take place on Thursday.
“The public will recall that in celebrating our convocation last year, we instituted an annual Quranic recitation competition that will be taking place every year, together with the convocation ceremony.
“I am pleased to also announce that this year again, the Chancellor of the university, Alhaji Aminu Dantata has donated N12 million to all the participants in the different categories of the competition,” he said.
