Super Eagles stars William Troost-Ekong and Victor Boniface have taken to social media to lament the treatment they have been subjected to in Libya.
After defeating the Mediterranean Knights of Libya 1-0 last Friday in Uyo, Akwa Ibom, the Eagles departed for Libya on Sunday morning ahead of the second leg on Tuesday, October 15.
However, since they arrived in Libya they have been held hostage at Al Abraq Airport.
The Super Eagles said they were left without food, drink and internet access.
Troost-Ekong on Monday shared photos of his tired teammates on social media, describing the way they have been treated as disgraceful.
According to him, the team has decided to boycott the second leg.
Troost-Ekong alleged that hotels refused to accommodate them on the instruction of the Libyan government.
“At this point, we have called for our Nigerian Government to intervene and rescue us. As the captain together with the team we have decided that we will NOT play this game. CAF should look at the report and what is happening here. Even if they decide to allow this kind of behaviour, let them have the points. We will not accept to travel anywhere by road here even with security it’s not safe…,” he wrote.
Lamenting also, Boniface wrote on X, “Been at the airport for almost 13 hours no food no wifi no where to sleep. African we can do better.”
Later, he shared a video of a bus which he said the Libyan government provided but was rejected by the Eagles for being inadequate.
“See Iskaba bus wey them bring come yesterday. Nobody enter ooo,” he wrote.
While the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has condemned the treatment of the players, the Libya Football Federation (LFF) said in a statement on Monday that it was incorrect to say there is a deliberate attempt to frustrate the Nigerian team.
“We firmly reject any claims that suggest foul play or sabotage in this situation. It is important to highlight that just last week, our own national team faced significant challenges upon our arrival in Nigeria for the third match of the Africa Cup of Nations qualification,” the statement said.
