Victor Moses got a rare start on Wednesday when Chelsea visited Liverpool in the Carabao Cup.
Moses hadn’t started any game since Maurizio Sarri’s arrival in Stamford Bridge.
However, it was Eden Hazard who came off the bench to score a stunning late winner to seal a dramatic 2-1 win.
It looked as if Daniel Sturridge was going to hurt his former club after his bicycle kick put the home side ahead.
But full-back Emerson prodded home from a free-kick to make it 1-1 with 10 minutes left and Hazard then scored a brilliant winner, beating two players before striking from a tight angle, to seal the Blues’ passage to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.
Chelsea controlled the game in the first half with 63 per cent possession and Liverpool, having made eight changes, struggled to cope with the Blues’ best example of ‘Sarriball’.
Alvaro Morata should have put the visitors in front after a wonderful pass from Cesc Fabregas set him through on goal, but his lobbed effort was tipped away by Simon Mignolet.
Sadio Mane tested Willy Caballero with a header but the Argentinian veteran saved well. He then set up Naby Keita, who let fly from 20 yards out but Caballero at full stretch tipped his effort away.
Sturridge missed a sitter just seconds after halftime, rounding Caballero before sending his shot wide. But he made up for it, acrobatically finishing after the goalkeeper had palmed away Keita’s powerful shot.
