WAEC rates Lagos best in prompt fees payment

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) on Monday rated Lagos as the number one state in the country in terms of regular training for its teaching staff and prompt payment of WASSCE registration fees of public schools candidates.

Chairman of the Nigeria National Committee (NNC) of WAEC, Anne Okonkwo, made the commendation during a courtesy call on Governor Akinwunmi Ambode at the Lagos State Secretariat in Alausa, Ikeja.

Mrs Okonkwo noted that the state government should be commended for its huge investment in education which she noted has helped to increase the performance of the students from the state in their external examinations from 45% in the previous years to the present 54.7%.

She stated that it was in the record of the NNC of the examinations body that Lagos is one of the first states in the federation that accepted to partner with the council in the training of its teachers, adding that the training and retraining of tutors and other investment in education by the state government has significantly impacted on the quality of teaching and students performance.

Okonkwo urged other states to emulate Lagos by implementing sustainable policies that could promote the growth of education

The chairman who stated that the NNC is the highest policy making organ of WAEC, used the occasion to inform the governor that the 54th Annual meeting of the NNC would be held in the state from Thursday, December 1 to Friday, December 2, 2016.

She disclosed that the body would present WAEC Endowment Fund Prize Books to three best schools in the May/June 2015 WASCE from the state.

In his response, Ambode who was represented by Deputy Governor Oluranti Adebule assured that the state government will continue to partner with the body and implement sustainable educational policies that will make education in the state rank among the best in the world.

He called on the body to continue to maintain standard practice in the conduct of examinations in the country.
