Senator Ben Murray-Bruce of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said that the rich should not be punished for being rich, rather they should be admired.
The Senator representing Bayelsa East constituency in the National Assembly said this on Thursday via Twitter.
Mr Murray-Bruce’s comment comes barely 24 hours after the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) released Babalele Abdullahi, son-in-law to the PDP presidential candidate in the recently held presidential election, Atiku Abubakar.
The EFCC might in the coming weeks press charges against Mr Abdullahi for alleged fraud.
Murray-Bruce, however, in his tweet said that wealth should not be treated as a sign of corruption.
“Don’t punish the wealthy for being rich. Poverty is not a virtue. Wealth is not a sign of corruption. On the contrary, it is often a sign of hard work. Our job as leaders is not to equalise poverty. Rather, it is to spread prosperity. Wealth is to be admired, not suspected,” he wrote.
