Wema Bank Managing Director, Moruf Oseni, has been captured dancing at the bank’s International Women’s Day (IWD) 2025 event, on Tuesday, March 11, at the bank’s Head Office in Lagos.

Clips shared on Wema Bank’s official Instagram page captured several moments from the event, including Oseni dancing alongside participants, award presentations, panel discussions and entertainment segments featuring music and poetry performances.

The event, themed “Harnessing Innovation & Technology to Accelerate Financial Inclusion for Women,” brought together distinguished women from various industries to discuss innovative approaches to financial inclusion and sustainable empowerment for women.

A key moment at the event was the graduation of the second cohort of the Big Sister Programme under the Wema Women Network.

Other highlights included the HeForShe 2025 Awards recognising male employees championing women’s empowerment and a panel session moderated by media personality Olive Emodi.

Panelists included Dr. Nneka Okekearu (Director, Enterprise Development Centre, Pan-Atlantic University), Solape Akinpelu (CEO, Harvest) and Tochi Ginigeme (Lead, Deal Matchmaking, Impact Investors Foundation), who shared their expertise on leveraging technology to break barriers for women.

Speaking on Wema Bank’s commitment to gender equality, the bank’s Chairman, Dr. Oluwayemisi Olorunshola, stated:

“The theme of this year’s International Women’s Day is ‘Accelerate Action,’ and as the first female Chairman of Wema Bank, my career is a testament to the impact that can be generated when individuals and corporations take decisive steps for women’s empowerment. The goal of the 5th Sustainable Development Goal, ‘Gender Equality,’ is to build a world where women can thrive without discrimination and oppression, and we must all contribute to achieving this goal.”

Wema Bank MD/CEO, Moruf Oseni, reaffirmed the bank’s long-standing commitment to financial inclusion and women’s empowerment, saying:

“This mission of empowering lives is deeply rooted in our identity as Wema Bank. From inception in 1945 to the present, we have carried on the mission of empowerment. While much has changed in the last eight decades, our commitment to inclusion and support for women has remained constant.

“Since the launch of SARA by Wema in 2019, we have banked over 400,000 unbanked women, disbursed over N75 billion in low-interest loans, and awarded over $20,000 in grants.

“We have also created over 900 jobs for women, provided market access for 3,000 female entrepreneurs, and generated over $4 million in sales. ‘Accelerating Action’ for us is beyond lip service—we walk the talk when it comes to women empowerment.”

Wema Bank will celebrate its 80th anniversary on May 2, 2025.
