Former governor of Anambra State and Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, has explained his decision to commit over N1.5 billion to education, healthcare and other initiatives in 2024.
Speaking during a recent visit to the Anglican Bishop of Nnewi, Rt. Rev. Ndubisi Obi, Mr Obi emphasised that his charitable acts are rooted in a deep concern for humanity rather than self-promotion.
Obi cited the day’s donations of N10 million to Bishop Ephraim Ikeakor for the College of Nursing Sciences, Amichi, and another N10 million to Bishop Ndubisi Obi for ongoing projects at ADON College of Health Technology in Nnewi as examples of initiatives that inspire him to continue giving.
“Even before my public life, I have always derived satisfaction from contributing to worthy causes that uplift humanity,” Obi said. He cited past efforts, including his contributions to Haiti’s rebuilding efforts following its devastating earthquake, as examples of his longstanding dedication to humanitarian work.
Obi recounted his visit to facilities run by Bishop Ndubisi, such as a Diocesan rehabilitation centre for victims of drug abuse and a school for children with special needs. He expressed admiration for the bishop’s commitment to uplifting vulnerable populations, stating, “When you witness such dedication to humanity, it is impossible not to contribute – not for personal recognition, but for the sake of humanity.”
When asked if his philanthropy was tied to political or public image considerations, Obi dismissed the suggestion, affirming that giving back is a moral, spiritual, and social obligation for him.
He said his acts of giving fulfil his duty to society and humanity. Obi promised that as long as God grants him the resources, he will continue contributing to causes that make a difference.
