Why I ran for political office in 2023 – Olumide Oworu

Actor Olumide Oworu has shared the reasons behind his decision to run for political office during the 2023 general elections.

In February 2023, Olumide declared his intention to contest the Surulere Constituency 1 seat in the Lagos State House of Assembly under the Labour Party (LP).

However, his candidacy stirred social media discussions when his name did not appear on the electoral body’s result sheet.

Desmond Elliot, also an actor turned politician, eventually won the seat under the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking during an appearance on Nollywood On Radio, the 30-year-old actor expressed dissatisfaction with the state of the nation.

He highlighted the decline across various sectors and emphasized the importance of collective involvement in national affairs.

“We just need to be a part of our affairs,” Olumide said.

“I want to live in Nigeria, I want to raise my family in a Nigeria that is good, that is a land of opportunities. I know how things were when I was growing up, and it is just sad to see that we are on a downward spiral.

“Almost nothing, minus the entertainment industry, sports, and a few other sectors, has anything positive. Everything else just seems to be nosediving, and I actually want to be part of the people making some form of change in society.”

Olumide, who began acting at the age of six in the drama series Everyday People, gained widespread recognition for his role as Tari in the popular TV series The Johnsons.

Over the years, he has featured in numerous films and has won awards for his acting prowess.
