Kunle Afolayan is set to shoot scenes in the second season of the Anikulapo series in Ghana.
The filmmaker confirmed this in an Instagram post on Tuesday.
“ANIKULAPO SERIES- New season. Location recce in Ghana in collaboration with @nationalfilmauthority @julietyaaasantewaasante,” Kunle captioned the post.
The multiple award-winning film director travelled to Ghana with a team that included director of KAP Film and Television Academy Seun Soyinka and photographer Peter Okosun.
His children Eyiyemi, Dieko, Darasimi and Darimisire were also on the trip.
Among the places visited in Ghana was the Elmina Castle, a slave trading post built by the Portuguese in 1482.
QEDNG learnt that themes of war and slavery will feature in Anikulapo Season 2.
The decision to shoot in Ghana was reached at a meeting between Kunle Afolayan and officials from Ghana’s National Film Authority, led by CEO Juliet Asante, at the Cannes Film Festival in May.
Sources close to the filmmaker told QEDNG that Kunle had considered using slave posts in Nigeria or Togo before finalising the deal with Ghana.
Writing in an Instagram post on Tuesday, Juliet Asante thanked Kunle and his team “for taking the time to explore some beautiful places in Ghana.”
She added, “It was a great learning experience all round and we had a lot of fun.”
Asante’s National Film Authority is confident Anikulapo will promote her country’s “Shoot in Ghana” project and strengthen its creative bond with Nigeria.
“Ghana is inviting the world to #ShootInGhana and capture the stunning sceneries and excellent facilities the country offers. This initiative will create employment opportunities for Ghanaians in these film projects and showcase Ghana and its people to a global audience.
“This endeavor will enhance tourism, generate income, and strengthen Ghana’s soft power,” the agency said in an Instagram post.
Shooting of Anikulapo Season 2 is expected to commence in the first week of August at the KAP Film Village and Resort located in Igbojaye, Itesiwaju Local Government in Oyo State.
The Ghana scenes will be shot thereafter.
