Lagos State Police Command has said that Afrobeat singer Seun Kuti was handcuffed after his arrest on Monday because he has shown “propensity for violence.”
After visiting the commissioner of police Idowu Owohunwa on Monday morning, Seun was arrested, handcuffed and taken to the state CID in Panti, Yaba for investigation.
The Afrobeat star was captured on camera slapping a police officer in uniform on Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos. The video went viral on Saturday.
After posting photos of Seun in handcuffs at the state CID, a tweep named Engr Yookos asked: “Why d hancuffs?”
Spokesman of the police in Lagos Benjamin Hundeyin responded that the law empowers the police to place handcuffs on any suspect with propensity for violence.
“Because the law empowers us to place on cuffs any suspect who has shown propensity for violence and propensity for evading justice,” he replied.
Seun said on Saturday that he has evidence the police officer he slapped “tried to kill” him and his family.
“He tried to kill me and my family. I have the proof but I no dey chase clout. He has apologised and I have agreed not to press charges. Make una mind una business make the poor guy no lose him job,” the 40-year-old defended himself via Instagram Story following backlash.
