Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has said that not only did the late group chief executive officer of Access Holdings Plc Herbert Wigwe offer corporate support to Lagos, he also did so on a personal level.
Mr Sanwo-Olu spoke on Monday at an event held at Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos to celebrate Wigwe’s professional legacy.
The event was divided into six segments – Young Hebert, the banker, the entrepreneur, the CEO, the builder and the ambassador.
He said, “On a personal note, Herbert did not only take me as a brother, my son worked with him in one of his offshore companies. He’s the highest donor of my wife’s women conference and he has been the major supporter of my daughter who is trying to catch up in real estate. I have indeed lost a big friend.
“He was born in Lagos Island and we will do something with that name in Lagos Island and Lagos will not forget Herbert Wigwe.”
“Herbert was one of the very first people that supported my ambition generously,” he revealed.
Sanwo-Olu said Wigwe, his business partner Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, Africa’s richest man Aliko Dangote and a host of others were supportive of Lagos State Government and the entire country in the fight against COVID-19.
Tributes of President Bola Tinubu, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, France President Emmanuel Macron, and former US President Bill Clinton were read at the event.
Also present at the event were Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, minister of finance Wale Edun, CBN governor Olayemi Cardoso, former CBN governor Lamido Sanusi, businessman Femi Otedola among others.
Wigwe, his wife Chizoba; first son Chizi; and a former group chairman of Nigerian Exchange Group, Abimbola Ogunbanjo, died in a helicopter crash that occurred near a border town between California and Nevada in the United States on February 9.
