Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has sacked the vice-chancellor of Rivers State University, Blessing Didia, and the deputy vice-chancellor in charge of administration, Magnus Oruwari.
Their removal is said to be connected with the recent cult clashes and killings in the university.
In the last four days, two students have been killed, one of whom was a final year student in the faculty of agriculture, Prince Barisua.
He was shot in the head on Monday by suspected cultists on campus immediately he finished writing his examinations.
Wike had on Tuesday queried the vice-chancellor and his deputy over the killings.
However, a statement on Saturday by the permanent secretary in the state ministry of education, Dagogo Hart, said Wike has approved the removal of the two officers.
The governor named the deputy vice-chancellor in charge of academics, Opuenebo Owei, as acting vice-chancellor.
Wike also ordered the suspension of staff recruitment exercise in the university.
“A committee has been set up to investigate the employment exercise and report to the Rivers State Governor in two weeks,” the statement said.
