Senator Shehu Sani has said that a woman who appeared in a viral video lamenting the influx of the Almajirai (Qu’ranic school pupils) from the north to the southeast was not his wife.
Last week, southeastern leaders alleged that the Almajirai, who are being repatriated to their states of origin because of the coronavirus pandemic, were also moving into the region in large numbers.
The former Kaduna South legislator disowned the woman in a tweet on Tuesday, saying his wife had been urging him to break his silence on the issue.
“The lady in a trending video on social media angrily critical of the movement of people from d north to the south is not my wife as reported,” Sani wrote.
“For two days, my wife has been insisting that I tweet a rejoinder, whenever I said the claim should be ignored her response is ‘Ignore what?’”
Then he quoted his wife, saying: “You know I’m not a politician. What is the meaning of listen to the message & ignore the messenger. It’s either you tweet & openly deny the report that she is your wife or else I will have to record & post my own video in Hausa, English, Fulfulde & Arabic that she is not.”
The woman, who had a northern accent, had alleged in the video that the Almajirai being transported to the southeast were the “same boys who would not allow them (the Igbo) to drink water and drop cup in some of the northern states.”
