Many construction workers were feared trapped when a seven-storey building collapsed in Port Harcourt, Rivers State on Friday evening.
An eyewitness told NAN that the building located on Woji Road in the Government Reserved Area of the city collapsed “just collapsed on the busy workers.”
A journalist whose office is two buildings away told a WhatsApp group of online publishers, “over 100 workers are still inside and rescue efforts are reportedly slow. Endless tears… people are weeping endlessly. No light as we speak, rescue efforts are so slow.
Rivers public relations officer Nnamdi Omoni described the incident as “unfortunate”.
“As we speak, I cannot state the number of casualties; rescue operation is already ongoing.
“We are doing our best to save as many lives as possible,” he said.
South-south zonal coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Martins Ejike said that the agency’s officers were participating in the rescue operations.
“The only thing I can tell you now is that NEMA personnel are part of the rescue team,” he said.
