Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu has urged local businesses to adopt sustainable practices and ethical marketing strategies, to enhance their reputation and contribute to a more sustainable Lagos.
Sanwo-Olu made the call during the annual World Consumer Rights Day celebration on Tuesday in Lagos.
The event with the theme, “A Just Transition To A Sustainable Lifestyle” was organised by Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA).
Sanwo-Olu, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Mrs Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin, commended LASCOPA for its dedication to safeguarding consumer interests and promoting fair business practices.
He underscored the role consumers played in shaping the economy and the responsibility of upholding their rights, reiterating his administration’s commitment to consumer protection.
The governor assured that his administration would continue to prioritise economic sustainability to create a 21st-century economy where businesses thrive while upholding consumer rights.
According to him, this year’s theme resonates with the vision for a greener, more sustainable Lagos.
Sanwo-Olu emphasised the need to empower consumers with knowledge and resources to make environmentally responsible choices without compromising their basic rights or quality of life.
“To drive this transition, the government is committed to policies encouraging sustainable production, efficient waste management, and consumer education.
“Initiatives such as circular economy programmes, clean energy projects, and plastic waste reduction strategies are underway.
“This includes the launch of the Lagos Climate Action Plan and the establishment of the Lagos State Carbon Registry,” he said.
The governor stressed that a just transition meant ensuring no one was left behind, encouraging accessibility to eco-friendly products, promoting ethical business practices and responsible consumption.
He advised residents to embrace sustainable lifestyles, make informed choices and hold businesses accountable.
The governor also called on community leaders and organisations to collaborate on sustainability projects, valuing local voices and perspectives in shaping policies and initiatives.
He added that international best practices and partnerships was important in enhancing sustainability and consumer protection efforts.
Similarly, Mr Afolabi Solebo, General Manager, LASCOPA, said the agency would continue striving for greater consumer empowerment, equitable access to resources and responsible consumption that benefits people and the planet.
He emphasised the need for consumers and stakeholders to actively participate in shaping a sustainable future that upheld fairness, accessibility and inclusivity.
“As the world grapples with environmental, economic and social challenges, LASCOPA will continue to advocate for consumer rights.
“We will ensure that policies and initiatives align with the evolving needs of consumers,” he said.
