Yahaya Bello didn’t present himself, we arrested him — EFCC

Yahaya Bello

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) said it arrested former governor of Kogi State Yahaya Bello over allegations of multi-billion naira fraud.

Spokesperson for the EFCC Dele Oyewale confirmed to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that Bello was apprehended around 12:54 p.m. on Tuesday.

Bello’s media office earlier said he drove himself and his lawyers in a black Hilux to the EFCC’s headquarters after the Supreme Court dismissed a suit filed by states questioning the constitutionality of the agency.

Oyewale disclosed that despite being declared wanted by the EFCC, Bello failed to surrender to the authorities and was subsequently taken into custody by operatives in Abuja.

“We arrested him at 12:54 p.m. He did not surrender himself to the commission. Three of his lawyers are here with him,” Oyewale stated.

The former governor is currently undergoing interrogation by EFCC investigators. According to Oyewale, Bello is being held in EFCC custody and will be arraigned in court soon.
